The history of the AGIE brand is a complicated one. The original company was founded in 1861 when Staib & Cie started trading in CHARMILLES. After a series of takeovers and mergers over the years that followed, the two market leaders at the time, CHARMILLES and AGIE, merged in 1996 to create the AGIE Chamilles Group — which instantly became the world leader in EDM machinery. The company started manufacturing high-performance milling machines in 1999, and acquired the Mikron machining business a year later. After a series of further takeovers, GF AGIE Chamilles was born in 2007.

The AGIE brand is now part of GF Machining Solutions, which is one of the world’s leading suppliers of EDM and milling machinery. The products currently manufactured by this highly successful company include high-performance milling machines, and electric discharge machines. More recently, the company has branched out into the manufacturing of various 3D laser texturing machines — which still bear the AGIE brand name. GF Machining Solutions employs close to 3,000 people across 50 sites around the world.

The company’s various milling solutions offer high cutting speeds and exceptional levels of accuracy. AGIE EDM and milling machines are capable of machining tempered materials to a standard that makes them ready to use.

High-speed machining centres (HSM) are engineered and manufactured in Switzerland, and they boast high feed rates, high-speed spindles and a rate of acceleration that is essential for high-quality machining of three-dimensional surfaces. The company’s HSM milling centres are around 10 times faster than conventional milling machines — offering an exceptional cutting speed and a great surface finish. There are also several HSM machining centres from GF Machining Solutions available today, all of which bear the Mikron brand.

AGIE CHARMILLES EDM machines have been hugely popular with large-scale manufacturers around the world for decades. These electrical discharge machining centres are used for die-sinking, wire cutting and hole drilling. EDM machines are used to process conductive materials such as titanium and steel, and they’re capable of producing a level of accuracy of up to a thousandth of a millimetre.

Die sinking EDM machines bearing the AGIE CHARMILLES brand name utilises technology such as FTC (the world’s fastest tool changer) to substantially reduce the wear and tear on electrodes. The die-sinking solutions from this innovative manufacturer offer fast removal and mirror finishes.

The micro-machining solutions from AGIE CHARMILLES are used extensively in the watch-making and medical sectors. They have been engineered to produce miniaturised components of the highest quality. There are four machines in this class that are currently in production at GF Machining Solutions, each offering its own distance of travel along the X, Y and Z axes:

Distance of travel along X,Y and Z axes:

  • AgieCharmilles FORM 1000: 220mm x 160mm x 250mm
  • AgieCharmilles FORM 2000 VHP: 400mm x 300mm x 350mm
  • AgieCharmilles FORM 3000 VHP: 600mm x 400mm x 500mm
  • AgieCharmilles FORM S 350: 350mm x 250mm x 300mm

The standard EDM machining centres available from this respected manufacturer offer a range of primary functions, including general purpose machining, cost-effective machining and super finish machining. They each offer specific distances of travel along the X, Y and Z axes.

Wire cutting EDM machines bearing the AGIE CHARMILLES brand name are capable of fast and efficient processing of metal workpieces while maintaining exceptionally high levels of accuracy. These powerful machining centres use a metallic wire charged with electricity to cut shapes and contours into workpieces. They are typically controlled by CNC, and the technology is used in extrusion dies and blanking punches. An AGIE CHARMILLES wire cut machine creates craters in a workpiece through the use of different impact angles — creating parts that taper or have varying profiles at the top and bottom.

Many EDM machines from AGIE have been discontinued by the company, but they are still available from used machinery marketplaces. For instance, the AgieCut Classic 2 is as five-axis CNC EDM machine with Auto Wire Thread technology. The AgieCut 150 HSS was first produced in 1998, offering submerged cutting with a five-axis operation. The AGIE Evolution 2 delivers a similar level of performance, but it includes patented AgieVision technology for auto-wiring. An older machine with a far lower price-tag is the AgieCut 200D, which is still one of the most reliable wire cutting EDM machines still in use today.

Micro-machining can be carried out by one of five different CHARMILLES wire cut machines, using a selection of travel distances along the X, Y and Z axes:

  • AgieCharmilles CUT 1000: 220mm x 160mm x 100mm
  • AgieCharmilles CUT 1000 Oil Tech: 220mm x 160mm x 100mm
  • AgieCharmilles CUT 2000 Oil Tech: 350mm x 250mm x 256mm
  • AgieCharmilles CUT 2000 S: 350mm x 250mm x 256mm

The high-speed machining centres using wire cutting EDM technology are capable of very high processing speeds while maintaining the integrity of the workpiece’s surface. There are also machining centres suited to higher-than-average levels of accuracy, as well as centres considered appropriate for general use.

Hole drilling EDM machining centres typically use a low-cost electrode tube — most often made with either copper or brass — to drill holes on a conductive material at high speed. The diameter of the hole that can be drilled with this type of EDM machining centre ranges from 0.3mm to 3mm. A five-axis configuration allows the machine to drill holes at any angle on an inclined workpiece. This highly versatile and adaptable technology is used widely in the aerospace, energy, medical and automotive industries.

There are currently three general purpose hole drilling EDM machining centres available from AGIE CHARMILLES, offering varying travel distances along the X, Y and Z axes.

  • AgieCharmilles DRILL 20: 300mm x 200mm x 300mm

The laser texturing machines from AGIE CHARMILLES are capable of texturising, marking and engraving metal workpieces with exceptional levels of accuracy. The laser texturing technology developed by the company can create individual and complex patterns using various etching processes. These CNC-controlled machines are used widely in the automotive, aeronautical and space industries.

There are currently five laser texturing solutions in production at GF Machining Solutions, each with their own travel distances across the X, Y and Z axes:

Whether you’re searching for a used AGIE wire EDM machine or a die sinking machine, you might find it difficult to find the very latest models. These robust and hard-wearing items of machinery are made to the highest possible standards, so they tend to stay in operation for many years. There are, however, older models on the market from time to time, which include the AGIE AGIEtron and the AGIE AGIEcut. These very capable EDM machining centres can be picked up for anything between 3,000EUR and 10,000EUR. Keep watching used machinery marketplaces to be among the first to learn about the latest offers and auctions.
